The ancients of Kongur

It is said that Shiva himself came to Kailash from Kashi. We normally presume it to be the present-day Kashi, i.e., Varanasi in eastern Uttar Pradesh in India. This cannot be possible, for Shiva made Kashi his abode even before the Ganges came down to earth. He lived in Kashi with Ambika, far before Uma or Parvati were to be his consorts.

It is said that Shiva came to Kailash from the mountains to its north, deeper within western Tibet. And in this region, there is Kashi (also now known as Kashgar) in China. The Kongur mountains, the Karakul lake and the Karakoram highway lie between Mount Kailash and Kashi (a.k.a. Kashgar).

These are places of magic, of the unknown, of mythical stories that have not been told. It is said that the regions from Kongur to Kailash hold the secrets of the ancients.
